One Million Signatures Campaign for Women's Rights in Iran

The One Million Signatures Campaign for women's rights in Iran is a grassroots movement for gender equality launched in 2006 by women inside Iran. Its goal is to end gender discrimination in the Iranian legal system by raising consciousness and collecting one million signatures to present to Parliament. Since 2006, more than 40 campaigners have been arrested by the government for their peaceful activities.

Aahung (Karachi, Pakistan)

ELIGE (Mexico City, Mexico)

ELIGE is a youth-led organization committed to the defense and promotion of reproductive and sexual rights, articulated within a human rights framework to guarantee that they are able to exercise the full range of those rights. In 2001, ELIGE began a campaign called Stop the Impunity: Not One More Death to address the crisis of the unsolved murders of over 300 women factory workers in Juarez and Chihuahua, Mexico. In addition to conducting national and international public education on the Juarez murders, ELIGE was part of a commission that lobbied for a visit from the Special Rapporteur of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to Mexico.

Fatima Haider (Karachi, Pakistan)

Fatima Haider is the Program Director at Aahung, a Karachi-based NGO working to improve the sexual health of men, women, and adolescents since 1995. "We believe that all human beings have the right to sexual health and other human rights, as enshrined by the United Nations and ratified by all of its member states." Aahung works on awareness raising, capacity building, research and advocacy, and resource development, all of which are geared towards improving sexual health standards in Pakistan. According to Fatima, "Aahung was, and probably still is, the only organization in Pakistan that purely addresses issues relating to sex and sexuality. Simply being a part of this organization has been an extremely empowering experience."

Guerrilla Girls (New York City, USA)

Guerrilla Girls work anonymously, only appearing in public wearing gorilla masks, and under the names of dead female artists, to raise awareness about women's relationship to the arts and to culture generally. They asks questions like "Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum?" to unsettle the male-dominated art world, and also disseminate material on women who have revolutionized the arts, but are rarely acknowledged. "We use humor to convey information, provoke discussion, and show that feminists can be funny."

Justice for Girls (Alberta, Canada)

Justice for Girls is a non-profit organization that promotes freedom from violence, social justice, and equality for teenage girls who live in poverty. "JFG believes in young women's leadership and pushes for young women to be at the forefront of designing law, policy, and programs that affect their lives. Our work is guided by the leadership and experience of numerous young women for whom we have advocated and/or who are part of the organization as staff, interns, and board members."

LUNDU (Peru)

Monica Carrillo is a feminist, journalist, scholar, and poet. At the age of 21, she founded LUNDU an organization of Afro-Peruvian youth who work to promote recognition and respect for Peru's African-descendant population and to combat racism and sexism in Peruvian society. Mónica has also coordinated an international network against racism, and was a founder of the Youth Caucus at the 2000 United Nations World Conference Against Racism in South Africa. She has spoken widely on racism, sexism, sexuality, health, and the African diaspora around the world.

The Miss G_ Project for Equity in Education (Ontario, Canada)

The Miss G Project for Equity in Education is dedicated to feminist anti-oppression politics with a strong focus on education. Formed in 2005 by four student activists, the project's mandate is to provide young people, particularly young women, with the opportunity, support, and resources necessary to analyze and influence issues that affect their lives and futures. This includes acting as a community resource and mounting political actions towards the ongoing improvement of publicly funded education to meet its own policy commitments to equity in education, respect for diversity, and the provision of a safe and secure environment. Their current objective is the inclusion of a Women's and Gender Studies course in the Ontario Secondary School curriculum.
