Nobel Women's Initiative Congratulates Mary Robinson

The Nobel Women's Initiative congratulates Mary Robinson on being awarded the US Medal of Freedom by President Obama. She was one of 16 recipients awarded this prestigious prize for 2009 along with Nobel Peace Laureates Muhammad Yunus and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.610x

Mary Robinson is distinguished for her work as the first female president of Ireland and as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.  She has been serving as the honorary president of Oxfam since 2002, and is a founding member and chair of the Council of Women's World Leaders.  She founded the Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative and numerous other projects. Nobel Women's Initiative has been proud to partner with Mary Robinson and Realizing Rights on the Women Leaders Intercultural Forum (WLIF), which leverages women’s leadership to contribute to a more just and secure world.

Recent criticism of her work as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is both unjust and inaccurate.  Throughout her career Mary Robinson has demonstrated courage and compassion in advocating for human rights and has been a particular champion of the rights of women and children.

Mary Robinson continues her honorable work as a member of the Elders Group and also through her leadership of the Realizing Rights Initiative.
