The defensoras will spread a message that the human rights crisis in Mexico must not be swept under the carpet. Their visit comes just days before the “Three Amigos Summit”, a meeting between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, President Barack Obama, and President Enrique Peña Nieto, being held June 29 in Ottawa.
Members of the delegation include:Claudia Medina Tamariz (Breaking the Silence about Sexual Torture, Rompiendo el Silencio), Brenda Rangel Ortiz (Justice for the Disappeared, Desaparecidos Justicia CA),Marta Sanchez Soler (Mesoamerican Migrant Movement, Movimiento Migrante Mesoamericano), and Pilar Arrese Alcala (Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez Human Rights Centre, Centro Prodh).
In Ottawa, the delegation will be meeting with Canadian members of parliament, civil society, academics, government officials, and media. The delegation is a joint effort of Amnesty International Canada, the Latin American and Caribbean Studies department at Carleton University, and the Nobel Women’s Initiative.
