Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire is currently on board the Women’s Boat to Gaza with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. The boat left Barcelona on September 16 and is scheduled to arrive in Gaza on October 5. Maguire came on board at Messina, Italy. She published an article on the Peace People website October 3, 2016, sharing why she believes the Women’s Boat to Gaza is important:
“We can turn around from war to peace, from foes to friendship, from hate to forgiveness and love – it is a choice. We are powerful each in our own way. We can, when we believe passionately in love, change to a non-killing, nonviolent world.”
The Women’s Boat to Gaza aims to highlight the struggle of Palestinian women in Gaza. Freedom Flotillas in the past have challenged the Israeli blockade of Gaza and brought international attention to the resistance of the Palestinian people. The Women’s Boat to Gaza will continue to challenge the Israeli blockade, while also spotlighting Palestinian women activists who have been working for peace for decades.
