The 14th annual World Summit of Nobel Laureates was held in Rome from December 12th to the 14th. The Summit was organized by the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates. Nine Nobel Peace laureates participated in this year’s event.
Laureates Jody Williams, Tawakkol Karman, Leymah Gbowee, Shirin Ebadi and Mairead Maguire were all in attendance, with the hopes of cultivating a “new way forward – a way with love and compassion.”
The Summit had been planned for Cape Town, South Africa in mid October. The location was changed after a number of laureates protested the South African government’s decision to refuse H.H. the Dalai Lama a visa. He was one of the laureates that attended the Summit in Rome.
The Summit concluded with the Laureates call for international, government and individual action for peace. Asks included government adherence to treaties and conventions addressing nuclear and robotic weaponry, commitment to ending conflict in the Middle East, worldwide attention to the protection of our climate, and ending global injustices of poverty.
