We spent a good and productive day with Leymah and her team at the Gbowee Peace Foundation here in Monrovia, getting ready for the arrival of the delegation members tomorrow.
The pictures and notes on the Foundation’s walls speak to the great pride women in Liberia feel for Leymah’s accomplishments. And to the women’s determination that history not repeat itself. I loved this handwritten document, signed by dozens of Liberian women the year that Leymah won the Nobel peace prize:
The women of Liberia
Prayed, cried and sacrificed
for peace. They stood for
peace when no one would
stand.
We decree
That we will no longer
Stand by and accept
Conflict in our homes,
Our communities,
Our nations.
We, the future women of
Liberia will work to
Ensure that peace remains
In Liberia.
