BACKGROUND:
Nobel Women’s Initiative is led by eight women Nobel Peace Prize laureates - Jody Williams (USA), Shirin Ebadi (Iran), Tawakkol Karman (Yemen), Leymah Gbowee (Liberia), Rigoberta Menchú Tum (Guatemala), Narges Mohammadi (Iran), Oleksandra Matviichuk (Ukraine) and Maria Ressa (Philippines). Women are crucial to attaining lasting peace, and yet in times of war and conflict they are seen as victims, and too often excluded from formal peace-building narratives and processes. The laureates work together to use the platform and access that the Nobel Peace Prize offers to elevate the voices and support the work of women peace activists around the world.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Women in Palestinian territories face a multitude of challenges. Long-standing gender inequalities and harmful practices are pervasive, including but not limited to child marriage, male guardianship, lack of access to social or political leadership, property ownership or economic independence.
The illegal occupation of Palestinian Territories and the ongoing brutal war waged by Israel exponentially exacerbates the situation for women. While all Palestinian people face forced displacement, disappearance, restricted access to basic services, and erosion of human rights, the occupation and war have specific gendered impacts on women, notably increased susceptibility and exposure to gender-based violence.
At the same time, women are crucial to keeping their communities and the wider society together, in keeping life going, in continuing to celebrate life and culture. Women are also crucial to fighting for justice, peace, and against terror. Yet their voices are rarely heard, and their contributions too often overlooked.
We seek to change that.
