An extraordinary online meeting brought together eight women Nobel Peace Laureates in celebration of the work and resilience of Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who is temporarily released from Tehran’s Evin prison on a 21-day suspended sentence for medical reasons. With less than a week remaining before her expected return to prison, this moment served as a poignant reminder of the urgency of securing her permanent freedom.
This historic gathering was about sisterhood, about Women, Life, Freedom, about the fight against gender apartheid, about Narges. Joining the call on December 19 from around the world was Shirin Ebadi (2003, Iran); Jody Williams (1997, United States); Leymah Gbowee (2011, Liberia); Tawakkol Karman (2011, Yemen); Malala Yousafzai (2014, Pakistan); Maria Ressa (2021, Philippines); and Oleksandra Matviichuk (2022, Center for Civil Liberties, Ukraine). The women laureates came together to celebrate Narges’ courage and reaffirm their unwavering support, expressing that they can't wait to be together to hug her in person one day.
Narges’ resistance symbolizes hope and the unyielding resolve of women fighting for justice, equality, and freedom, even in the face of immense adversity. Her fight is not hers alone but a shared struggle for all women, political prisoners, and those standing against tyranny.
The #FreeNarges Coalition and Nobel Women’s Initiative remain steadfast in our commitment to Narges and all those unjustly detained. The Nobel Laureates gathered demand her unconditional release, the dismissal of all charges against her, and the freedom of all political prisoners in Iran.
The fight for Narges’ permanent freedom, adequate medical care, and the broader struggle against oppression continues with relentless resolve.
We call on the global community to stand in solidarity, amplifying the rallying cry: “Women, Life, Freedom.” Together, we can demand justice for Narges Mohammadi and all those who resist oppression with courage and hope.
