Iran on the Brink: War, Repression and a Deepening Humanitarian Crisis

April 7, 2026 Update by Shirin Ebadi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate

Iran is in an extremely dire situation. Trump has stated that if the strait is not reopened by Wednesday, he will order the bombing and shutdown of critical infrastructure and power plants.

The people of Iran are left standing defenseless in the midst of this war.

On one side, the Islamic Republic suppresses even the slightest opposition to the war, arresting and executing individuals under accusations of espionage and treason. Prisons are overcrowded with those who oppose its policies, and in just the past week, Iran has executed 4 prisoners.

On the other side, the war itself continues to take innocent lives without pause. If power plants and vital infrastructure are also targeted, the consequences for ordinary people are unimaginable.

Tragically, in response to the bombings, the Islamic Republic has reportedly launched attacks on neighboring countries such as the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait, further escalating and complicating the crisis.
