Immediate ceasefire, unrestricted aid to Gaza, and release of all hostages are urgent human imperatives

Statement by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Narges Mohammadi

5 August 2025

The human eye cannot bear to witness any more images of Gaza’s starving children withering away.

The relentless and unforgiving suffering of the people of Gaza cannot be captured in words.

How can anyone witness the long lines of starving civilians waiting amid the ruins for humanitarian aid, only to be met with bullets before receiving a meal, and not feel their humanity stripped away?

How can the world see the image of an emaciated Israeli hostage held in solitary confinement and not be deeply shaken by the humanitarian implications?

What has become of the fundamental principles of human rights? What have the people of Gaza fallen victim to? From what policies and conflicts does the suffering of hostages stem?

Why have the lives of children, hostages, and civilians become so utterly unprotected?

And thousands of other unanswered questions—none of which can justify this vast suffering or the blatant violation of basic human rights.

What role has the Israeli government played in the continued non-implementation of numerous UN resolutions over the years, thereby trapping a defenseless and besieged population at the crossroads of war, power struggles, and ideological authoritarianism—and now exposing them to the endless agony of famine?

What role has Hamas played, not just on October 7th, but in shaping the path of the Palestinian struggle?

What role have Hezbollah and other Iranian proxy forces played in turning Palestine into a pawn in the ideological power games of the region and in spreading their agendas across the Middle East?

What role have the world’s democratic powers played in their lack of will, coherence, and consensus to reduce and end the hostilities in the Middle East—especially in Palestine and Israel—and how have their policies contributed not to the strengthening, but rather to the undermining of international law and the authority of the United Nations?

How long will international institutions, intellectuals, writers, media, peace activists, and human rights defenders continue with mere statements of “support” and “condemnation,” while the conflicts reach unimaginable levels and the roots of war and aggression remain untouched?

History may one day answer for all this, but the responsibility of today is clear:

The time to end the war in Gaza is now—immediately, decisively, and without conditions or delay.

Now is the time for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the unconditional release of both Palestinian and Israeli hostages, and the removal of the blockade on Gaza and the fast delivery of humanitarian aid to its people. These are urgent necessities. Recognition of the State of Palestine is not only part of the two-state solution and the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, but a vital step toward just and lasting peace, regional and global stability. It is a crucial solution that can curtail the influence of authoritarian and ideological regimes, diminish the role of terrorist forces in fueling conflict, and bring UN resolutions closer to realization.

Today’s world and the major regional and global powers are not incapable of resolving this escalating and horrifying humanitarian crisis. With political will and immediate action, they can and must put an end to this unbearable and unthinkable situation.

Any delay or indifference to what is unfolding in Gaza will only set us further back from the path of human dignity and progress, marking a shameful chapter in the history of humanity and our shared moral responsibility.
