By Jamella Chesney
A gift to the 2025 Sister-to-Sister cohort of the Nobel Women’s Initiative
When the day comes, I must ask myself
Who will bear the flame to light the way
Who will lead the movement of the people
Who will fight for justice amidst the strife
Who else but the fearless woman
The woman who carries hope in her belly
She is the hummingbird that flaps her wings,
Tirelessly, to the beat of her heart,
Because the only option is to keep moving
I am that fearless woman
I am as mighty and unmoving as the mountains
Rooted and rising high to touch the sky
I am the blessed rainforest and dry desert
I am the rough waters of the high seas
I am the brown soil shielding every seed
And I will not be silenced
Because freedom is the sound of my voice
It is the hammer that crumbles the stones in my throat
and sets fire to the chains at my feet
so I may break down the walls that cage me in
Mother nature is the essence of our existence
Reminding us that our body is our first territory
That it is sacred and gives life to the Earth
Because only a fearless woman can walk
with the weight of two heartbeats
And although pain and suffering are all around
Grief is a reminder that love persists
Because love, at its best, repeats itself
And multiplies like a million monarchs
flying south at the dawn of winter
As the golden star rises in the east
Darkness will falter and fall away
Truth and light will shine my path
And I will arise, a fearless woman,
courageous and free.
